MCS Coca-Cola Becomes Mongolia’s First Food Manufacturer to Completely Replace Raw Coal with a Gas-Fired Boiler

Our company has completely phased out raw-coal-burning technology and commissioned a gas-fired steam boiler. In doing so it has become the first food manufacturer in Mongolia to successfully deliver an emission-free, environmentally friendly project based on an innovative engineering solution.

By eliminating the use of around 7,000 tonnes of raw coal a year, the company is delivering the goals of its comprehensive environmental program step by step. As part of those goals, in 2010 it built an industrial wastewater treatment facility with its own funds and continues to supply gray water treated to a standard safe for discharge into the environment to the central system of Ulaanbaatar’s main treatment plant.

“By delivering this project, the company is able to implement at corporate level Government Resolution No. 43 on measures to reduce air pollution, Resolution No. 62 on prohibiting the use of raw coal, and the Ulaanbaatar Mayor’s Order A/1377 on prohibiting the use of raw coal in low-pressure boilers.

In delivering the project together with MCS International, we commissioned eight water-heating boilers from the Japanese company NTEC and four gas-fired steam boilers from the Korean company DAEYEOL, along with the associated infrastructure. These are fully automatic, new-technology boilers running on liquefied gas. Because the installation and commissioning period coincided with the global pandemic lockdown, we agreed with the equipment suppliers to carry out the adjustment and testing remotely in a virtual format — an approach that tested the skill of Mongolian engineers, saved time and introduced advanced technology.

T. Gantumur, City Manager of Ulaanbaatar, praised the significance of the project, saying: “This sets a good example of modernization for factories and enterprises that are not connected to the central heating supply and run raw-coal boilers.”
