About the Company

The formula for Coca-Cola was created by John Pemberton, a US army officer and pharmacist. A distinctly entrepreneurial man, he ran a variety of pharmaceutical businesses supported by a modern chemical laboratory and even produced a perfume called Sweet Southern Bouquet. The legendary recipe is said to have been discovered by chance on a sunny day in 1886. Mixing ice-cold carbonated water with a little spice produced a taste so refreshing and pleasant that he decided to sell his brand-new creation at his own pharmacy counter. At the time, a glass sold for five cents. Dr Pemberton’s bookkeeper, Frank M. Robinson, persuaded him that “the two Cs would look well in advertising” and went on to create the first Coca-Cola logo. Before long the advertisement appeared in The Atlanta Journal, inviting the city’s residents to quench their thirst with the brand-new sparkling beverage.

In that first year, sales averaged just nine drinks a day. Dr Pemberton passed away without ever imagining how his creation would conquer the world, having sold his share of the business to Asa Candler, an able Atlanta businessman — the starting point of what would become the world’s most valuable brand.
