Below are the recommended daily intakes for the low- and no-calorie sweeteners used in some sparkling beverages:
Acesulfame potassium (Ace-K):
15 mg per kg of body weight. For a person weighing around 70 kg, the acceptable daily intake of acesulfame potassium is equivalent to the amount contained in 25 of our cans (of drinks containing acesulfame potassium).
Aspartame:
50 mg per kg of body weight. For a person weighing around 70 kg, the acceptable daily intake of aspartame is equivalent to the amount contained in 15 of our cans (of drinks containing aspartame).
Saccharin:
15 mg per kg of body weight. For a person weighing around 70 kg, the acceptable daily intake of saccharin is equivalent to the amount contained in 15 of our cans (of drinks containing saccharin).
Sucralose:
5 mg per kg of body weight. For a person weighing around 70 kg, the acceptable daily intake of sucralose is equivalent to the amount contained in 5 of our cans (of drinks containing sucralose).
Steviol glycosides:
12 mg per kg of body weight. For a person weighing around 70 kg, the acceptable daily intake of steviol glycosides is equivalent to the amount contained in 5 of our cans (of drinks containing stevia).
High-fructose corn syrup and sugar contain fructose and glucose in almost identical proportions, so there is virtually no difference in their sweetness. Because their composition is so similar, once consumed the body treats high-fructose corn syrup and sugar in essentially the same way. Since it satisfies appetite in the same manner, high-fructose corn syrup has the same effect as sugar. A 2007 study comparing sparkling beverages sweetened with sugar and with high-fructose corn syrup found no difference in their ability to quench thirst or to provide short-term energy (Melanson, 2007; Monsivais, 2007).
Consumers have enjoyed low- and no-calorie sweeteners for more than a hundred years, yet some people still try to link these ingredients to cancer and other illnesses.

No. Low- and no-calorie sweeteners are among the most thoroughly studied food ingredients in the world, and hundreds of studies have confirmed their safety. The safety of the sweeteners we use in our products is fully established. The Coca-Cola Company holds product safety and quality to the highest standard, and every ingredient in our formulas complies fully with the laws, regulations and standards of the countries in which our products are sold. After reviewing two studies that attracted a degree of media attention in 2011,
the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) concluded that “these two studies give no grounds to reconsider the safety assessments of aspartame or of other food additives authorized in the European Union”. EFSA will continue to monitor and evaluate scientific work in this field.
Several caloric sweeteners are used in beverages. The most common are sugar, high-fructose corn syrup, fructose, glucose and honey. All of them supply the body with energy, which is measured in calories.
Coca-Cola and Coca-Cola No Sugar contain only a small amount of caffeine — approximately 24–32 mg per 250 ml. That is about three times less than the caffeine in the same amount of brewed coffee. The caffeine in energy drinks is also considerably lower than in brewed coffee. The caffeine content of most sparkling beverages is approved by expert bodies such as the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
